The category of Premium Mulches is typically thought to include wood from the Cypress and Cedar species. These mulches are considered of higher quality because of the species’ natural resistance to bio-degradation (decay), as compared to some of the more common species. This resistance is due primarily to extractives in the heartwood that are toxic to decay causing fungi. These mulches will not only last longer than most other natural mulches, but will also keep their color longer.

Cypress and Western Red Cedar (which have been two of the most popular Premium Mulches in recent years), have increased dramatically in price due to the extremely high cost of freight to get the product to the Midwest.

Northern Cedar presents an excellent alternative to the other Premium Mulches offered in our area. Its beautiful appearance and superior durability make it a tremendous value because it grows locally in Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. Northern Cedar can be transported to our market for much less cost than other Premium Mulches.

Northern Cedar’s superior durability and longevity is supported by reports regarding Northern Cedar fence posts that are still sound after 40 – 50 years in service. Also the oldest dead Northern Cedar to be discovered thus far was 1,653 years old when it died. Equally amazing is the fact that, through radiocarbon dating, that ancient tree died over 900 years ago, around 1082. What has puzzled the scientists is the astounding durability of this wood.
