In the world of basic mulch groundcovers there has been significant changes occurring over the past few years. What started out as an all bark product originating from sawmills called “Bark Mulch,” has evolved into the market offering an imitation typically called shredded, coarse grind, or medium grind mulch (“metro wood”). Most of the basic mulch products offered into the market today are processed brush, branches, and stem wood that contain a very small percentage of bark in them.

Bark as it pertains to most woody species is the outer protective layer of the tree that is more resistant to decay and UV fading. Products with a higher percentage of bark content will outlast others in both aesthetics and utility.

Another down fall of metro wood mulch is the high content of leaf material. Leaf material and its high nitrogen content accelerate the composting process of the woody material. This is why much of the mulch ends up with a gritty, dirty look and feel. Also “metro wood” mulch sometimes ends up with a burnt smell to it.

We offer:
1) SylvaMulch, a product that is predominantly barked from northern hardwoods. It has been consistent in color and particle size day after day for the last nine years.
2) SylvaBark, a product that is predominantly barked from Red Oak and White Oak is somewhat coarser than SylvaMulch and has the traditional “Bark Mulch” look.
